ISO 9001 \u2013 Quality Assurance or Just Paper Tiger? \ud83d\udcd1\ud83d\udc05
\nFor over 35 years, I have been witnessing the implementation of ISO 9001 in the chemical and paper processing industry. After all these years, the question remains for me: Does this standard really bring sustainable quality improvements?
\nThe fact is:
\n\u2705 Every certified company has a „quality management system“.
\n\u2705 Annual audits check that everything is „ISO compliant“.
\n\u2705 Processes are documented, training courses are carried out, checklists are worked through.
\nBut what has really improved?
\n\ud83d\udd34 The number of product recalls has not decreased in many industries.
\n\ud83d\udd34 Amazon reviews are full of complaints about poor quality.
\n\ud83d\udd34 Consumer products are experiencing a decline in longevity rather than an improvement.
\n\ud83d\udd34 Many ISO audits are a mere formality \u2013 the main thing is that the certificate remains in place.
\nThe original idea behind ISO 9001 \u2013 continuous improvement \u2013 is often replaced by bureaucracy and formalism. Companies optimize their audit passing, not necessarily their quality.
\nOf course, in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals, automotive or IT, a structured QM system has its place. But in many areas of production, the question remains:
\n\u27a1\ufe0f How many resources go into audits and documentation \u2013 and how much into real quality improvement?
\n\u27a1\ufe0f Do we need a realignment of QM systems so that they don’t just exist on paper, but actually lead to better quality?<\/p>\n
