Many converters ask for “flat liners.” But what they often need isn’t just flatness—it’s stiffness.
Flatness is a visual and dimensional property. Stiffness is mechanical. And it’s stiffness that determines:
– Whether a liner feeds correctly through a die-cutting unit
– How a liner behaves in a dispenser
– Whether laminate curl develops during unwind
Two liners can lie perfectly flat on a table and perform completely differently on the line. One might buckle under tension. The other resists die bounce. Why? Because the underlying modulus and basis weight distribution differ.
This becomes especially important when shifting between PET, glassine, and CCK liners—or when trying to match performance across global supply sites.
Ask yourself:
– Do your line settings assume stiffness, not just thickness?
– Are product teams measuring Gurley stiffness or bending resistance as a spec?
– Is your liner failing because it’s curling—or because it can’t hold shape under load?
Flatness looks good. Stiffness works better.
